Overview
Mooting is an important part of the life of the Law School at UQ.
It is a voluntary activity, undertaken by large numbers of students every year, who enter a wide range of national and international mooting competitions.
Apart from the friendships it fosters, mooting provides students with vital experience in legal research, legal writing, legal problem-solving, teamwork, and oral advocacy.
To sustain the mooting programme, the support of the alumni community is critical. This support is provided personally, through volunteer mooting coaches and judging panels, and through financial support to cover the cost of travel.
For many years, support for the mooting programme was led by one of the Law School’s most prominent alumni, David F Jackson AM KC.
In his honour, the David F Jackson Memorial Mooting Dinner is held at UQ annually – at which the prestigious David F Jackson Trophy for Outstanding Advocacy is awarded.
With the benefit of this support, UQ has performed outstandingly in the main international mooting competitions – the Phillip C Jessup International Law Moot, the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and the International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot.
The mooting programme at UQ is presently led by the Director of Co-Curricular Programs, Dony Rodriguez. The UQ mooting community is very grateful to Dony for all of his dedication and efforts, above and beyond the call of duty, to making the Law School’s participation in mooting such a success.
