International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot
The International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot was established in 1999. The competition is held is different locations from year to year, with past venues including Brisbane, Sydney, Hong Kong, London Rotterdam, Singapore and Swansea.
The competition is based upon topical issues of international commercial maritime and arbitration law, as well as matters of private international law, which are framed as issues to be resolved before an arbitral panel.
The competition has particularly strong links to UQ, having been founded by Justice Sarah Derrington, then an academic at the Law School and an internationally recognised expert in the field, in 2000. Justice Derrington also served as the coach of the UQ team for many years, and, with the benefit of her Honour’s tutelage and mentoring, the moot has served as a the starting point for many UQ alumni’s involvement in maritime law.
From its origins at UQ, the competition has built up a strong community of supporters drawn from moot alumni, maritime lawyers and representatives of the shipping industry.
