Nota Bene (Summer 2025)

One of our aims in each edition of Nota Bene, in addition to featuring contemporary news of the Law School and its alumni, has been recording and presenting aspects of the history of the Law School and the Queensland legal profession that may not be widely known and which may not otherwise be documented. Last year, our focus in this regard was the historical practice of Queensland lawyers appearing in the Privy Council.

In 2025, we have two feature articles on this theme.

First up, we have a series of specially commissioned articles, including one by the Hon Ian Callinan AC KC, reflecting upon the life and career of the late Cedric Hampson AO KC, one of Queensland’s most influential and respected figures. The impetus for the articles was the Hampson Scholarship established by UQ in 2025, with the generous support of 39 donors from the Hampson family, colleagues and broader legal profession. The UQLA was extremely grateful for the generosity displayed by these donors towards the scholarship, and for the continued financial support of current students by alumni.

Our second feature focuses upon the experience of the Law School in decades past, by way of an engaging feature article contributed by former judge of appeal, the Hon Margaret White AO. From the late 1970s to early 1983, Justice White was a teacher at the Law School, and, later, also a member of Senate and Deputy Chancellor of the University.
