STATUTE Law

Because of the importance of statute law to legal practice, the UQLA and the Law School offer first year students in second semester a programme concerning the genesis of statute law.

The programme is usually presented at Parliament House in Brisbane.

The 2016 programme commenced with a short introduction by the President of the UQLA about the importance of statute law to legal practice.  The Hon Ian Walker MLA, an alumnus of the Law School, then explained the various steps in the process by which policy proposals are developed into enacted legislation.  A senior lawyer from the Office of Parliamentary Counsel then elaborated on the work involved in drafting bills for consideration by Parliament.  The programme concluded with a group discussion and the opportunity to undertake a tour of Parliament House.

The UQLA is very grateful for the continuing support for this programme provided by the staff of Parliament House, the Hon Ian Walker MLA and the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.
